Visit Six Flags Elitch Gardens
Take a rid on Twister II, an old-fashioned wooden coaster introduced to the park in 1995. That familiar clackety-clack will get your heart racing, and the view of the Mile-High City from the top of the first 100-foot hill is breathtaking. Twister II is a replica of the original Mr. Twister roller coaster that was built in 1965 and billed as "not having one foot of straight track." They got that right.

Kelly's Note: The park is literally in downtown Denver. Trust me, you can't miss it. Elitch's is not nearly as cool as some of the parks in the Midwest, but has good rides and is worth a visit...for the views from the coasters alone.

Catch a Sugar High
Visit the Hammond's Candies factory and pick up a fresh Mitchell Sweet - this old-fashioned marshmallow covered in caramel is Denver's finest homegrown treat. (And when you get them at the factory, the marshmallow center has the perfect amount of squishiness.)

Picnic at Pine Valley Ranch
Throughout the early 20th century, many of Colorado's homesteading families settled here. Now a swath of its pastoral beauty is designated open space. A trout-rich river runs through it; so, too, does the Narrow Gauge Trail, connecting the Pine Valley to the Pike National Forest. Fish from one of the piers, learn about indigenous critters and botany at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center or, perhaps best of all, just sit in the shade under the looming mountains and do nothing at tall.
